What is the best thing about being a writer?

There are many wonderful things about being a writer, but the best thing for me? I don’t have to work with anyone.  No one is my “boss”.  No one tells me what to writer, when to writer, or how to write.  I know that any mistakes made, are mine and mine alone.  I know that if the work doesn’t get done, it’s my fault.  I don’t have to rely on anyone to do any kind of work.  Of course there are drawbacks to that very same perk.  If there is a mistake, I can only blame myself.  There is no scapegoat to pin it on.

Another great thing about being a writer is that I can do it anywhere.  While waiting in line, I can brainstorm or take down a few notes.  I can write while sitting in the park, soaking up some sun, or at the pool, or in a restaurant while having lunch.  I have been know to whip out a note card at any moment and take down a thought or two.  You know the new trend of paper tablecloths at restaurants…..I have claimed one or two or ten as I swipe my daughters crayon and make a few notes while waiting for our entrée.  I think it embarrasses my teenager (extra perk).

That's why I enjoy writing, but what about you other writers out there?  Why do you write?  What perks do you enjoy?  Are there things about writing that you don’t like?

Have a great week everyone.

  1. Great post Courtney! I love it that you can literally throw down and write anywhere . . . which is important because you never know when you're going to be inspired to pen the next 15 pages! What I don't like . . . sometimes when I'm really getting into the process of writing I start to have this "other-worldly" feeling - almost as if I am living on a different planet from everybody else. It's sort of difficult to get back into reality and reconnect. ;)

  2. LOL, love the table cloth idea! I've been known to use gas station receipts. I don't know what it is about stopping for gas but I get inspired. Weird, right? So you can see that I literally write everywhere too. What I love best though is escaping into other worlds. Writing is so freeing.

  3. What I love best about writing... is writing! The whole process of the story is unbelieveably fun for me. I love coming up with ideas and sitting down to start writing them. I even love the editing because it's so amazing to see how you can polish up the story just by changing or eliminating a few words. However, remember I've only really written short stories and picture books so once I begin writing longer stuff, I could quickly change my mind about the editing process.
I also love writing because it occupies my mind from stressing over other things all the time. It helps me focus on things I can control, versus things I can't.
The only drawback to writing to me is getting rejected. That pretty much sucks all the way around. Even a good rejection hurts a bit. But once you get an acceptance, nothing else feels like it!!

  4. It's probably the smell of petrol, Kelly. And yes, it's like entering another dimension -- I have to reacquaint myself with family after.

I can't wait to embarrass Roz! Funny, Courtney.

  5. There are soooo many perks. I love to write for many reasons: I can take myself anywhere I want to go which is also relaxing and fun; entertaining others; and it is something I have done for a long time. Although I do prefer to type everything I can, I find myself making notes and writing in a notebook I carry with me everywhere!

  6. I love writing because I can do as little or as much as I want. I am my own boss. It's great! I love escaping into another world and becoming a character. No matter what my mood, I can pour it onto paper. I love watching to see where my characters will take me. Although sometimes I've had to put my foot down.
I carry a journal in my diaper bag/purse so if ideas come to me, I can write them down.
