There are many wonderful things about being a writer, but the best thing for me? I don’t have to work with anyone. No one is my “boss”. No one tells me what to writer, when to writer, or how to write. I know that any mistakes made, are mine and mine alone. I know that if the work doesn’t get done, it’s my fault. I don’t have to rely on anyone to do any kind of work. Of course there are drawbacks to that very same perk. If there is a mistake, I can only blame myself. There is no scapegoat to pin it on.
Another great thing about being a writer is that I can do it anywhere. While waiting in line, I can brainstorm or take down a few notes. I can write while sitting in the park, soaking up some sun, or at the pool, or in a restaurant while having lunch. I have been know to whip out a note card at any moment and take down a thought or two. You know the new trend of paper tablecloths at restaurants…..I have claimed one or two or ten as I swipe my daughters crayon and make a few notes while waiting for our entrée. I think it embarrasses my teenager (extra perk).
That's why I enjoy writing, but what about you other writers out there? Why do you write? What perks do you enjoy? Are there things about writing that you don’t like?
Have a great week everyone.

Great post Courtney! I love it that you can literally throw down and write anywhere . . . which is important because you never know when you're going to be inspired to pen the next 15 pages! What I don't like . . . sometimes when I'm really getting into the process of writing I start to have this "other-worldly" feeling - almost as if I am living on a different planet from everybody else. It's sort of difficult to get back into reality and reconnect. ;)

LOL, love the table cloth idea! I've been known to use gas station receipts. I don't know what it is about stopping for gas but I get inspired. Weird, right? So you can see that I literally write everywhere too. What I love best though is escaping into other worlds. Writing is so freeing.
ReplyDeleteWhat I love best about writing... is writing! The whole process of the story is unbelieveably fun for me. I love coming up with ideas and sitting down to start writing them. I even love the editing because it's so amazing to see how you can polish up the story just by changing or eliminating a few words. However, remember I've only really written short stories and picture books so once I begin writing longer stuff, I could quickly change my mind about the editing process.
ReplyDeleteI also love writing because it occupies my mind from stressing over other things all the time. It helps me focus on things I can control, versus things I can't.
The only drawback to writing to me is getting rejected. That pretty much sucks all the way around. Even a good rejection hurts a bit. But once you get an acceptance, nothing else feels like it!!
It's probably the smell of petrol, Kelly. And yes, it's like entering another dimension -- I have to reacquaint myself with family after.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to embarrass Roz! Funny, Courtney.
There are soooo many perks. I love to write for many reasons: I can take myself anywhere I want to go which is also relaxing and fun; entertaining others; and it is something I have done for a long time. Although I do prefer to type everything I can, I find myself making notes and writing in a notebook I carry with me everywhere!
ReplyDeleteI love writing because I can do as little or as much as I want. I am my own boss. It's great! I love escaping into another world and becoming a character. No matter what my mood, I can pour it onto paper. I love watching to see where my characters will take me. Although sometimes I've had to put my foot down.
ReplyDeleteI carry a journal in my diaper bag/purse so if ideas come to me, I can write them down.
